Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega triumph at the BNL Italy Major Premier Padel. The Spanish pair won the “derby” against compatriots Josemaria and Sanchez and gained the Roman Major, which marked the women’s tournament’s debut on the world’s most important and prestigious padel circuit. Born a little over a month ago, the pair formed by Triay and Ortega defeated the world number 1 at the end of three sets played on a high level and very tight, after 2 hours and 47 minutes of play: 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 the final result in front of a packed and cheering Centre Court.

Triay and Ortega got off to a great start and closed the first set quite easily, 6-3. Josemaria and Sanchez‘s reaction was not long in coming and the two champions, who were chasing title number 10 in this 2023, managed to bring the final to the deciding set, closing with the same score. Fireworks arrived in the third set. Spanish number two seeded players were 4-1 up and seemed to be able to easily get their hands on the title, but Josemaria and Sanchez “harpooned” first 4-4 and then 5-5, before the decisive break in the 12th game and the 7-5 success of the number 2 seeded pair.

At the end hugs and tears for Ortega and Triay, the latter Roman by adoption and considered by many to be the strongest left-side player in the world. “I’m really happy, it’s incredible to play here, in Italy“, Gemma Triay‘s words in Italian, “I still have goosebumps, this is a historic final, the first Premier Padel final, it’s the first final we won together, it’s the first time we beat Ari and Paula who are having an incredible season. If we won today it’s because we played so well, I’m really happy. I want to thank everyone, it’s been an incredible week. Hopefully we can see each other again next year, kisses to everyone“.

Thank you for supporting us, it’s been an incredible week,” Ortega echoed her, “I think it’s the best moment of my life and my career, this tournament was really very important for us and if yesterday it was a dream come true, just try to imagine today. I have no words…I want to congratulate our opponents, who are having a great season. It was a really very difficult final, I also want to thank our team who did a great job in a short time. It is a pleasure to play you Gemma, you are awesome. I dedicate this trophy to Maxi (the coach), who supports me and no matter what happens he is by my side. And of course to my family, my parents are here and they are the best!“.
